Response: Dozens of officers in riot gear prepare to enter HMP Littlehey near Huntingdon, CambridgeshireJust after 9pm witnesses heard raised voices and shouting from inside the prison.Dozens of prison officers, wearing riot gear and holding shields, arrived in vans and marched into the prison.A Prison Service spokesman said the officers injured at Littlehey were treated at a healthcare unit of the prison, and did not require hospital treatment.He said claims by the POA that the female officer had been knocked unconscious and that as many as 60 prisoners were refusing to return to their cells were incorrect.The young offenders wing, where the incident took place, holds around 60 prisoners, aged 18 to 21, he added.The POA said there had been problems at the prison, including brawls and assaults, for the past 12 months.
Ralph Valerio, of the POA national executive, believes a jug of hot water containing sugar was thrown at the male prison officer.He said: 'It contained sugar so it would stick to his skin. It has seriously burnt his face.'Mr Valerio went to the prison at about 4pm yesterday to discuss health and safety problems with the governor. He was told of the trouble after he left by local members of the POA committee.Mr Valerio said the disturbance followed an incident at the weekend involving a prison officer being hit on the head with a television set. Following the incident a prisoner was asked to comply with a search.

He assaulted the member of the staff, head-butting him.'Since then, prisoners had been 'egging each other on' to cause further disturbances, Mr Valerio said.The POA said specialist prison service teams had been deployed about 300 times to deal with serious incidents in British prisons since May last year.Just over a week ago, balaclava-clad inmates went on the rampage and torched buildings at Ford Prison, near Arundel, West Sussex.A number of buildings were burned to the ground during the violent spree, sparked by an attempted clampdown on contraband alcohol.On January 6 another serious disturbance was averted at HMP Swaleside on Kent's Isle of Sheppey, as staff struggled to retain control of the prison.In November last year, a three-day riot at Moorland Prison, Doncaster, resulted in the serious loss of prison places.Colin Moses, chairman of the POA, said: 'Frontline prison staff are engaging in weekly hand to hand combat as prisoners try to take control of our prisons.'The POA has consistently warned of the increasing violence and problems that would occur in the open estate. If Government turn a deaf ear to the warnings issued by the POA, the continuation to transfer inappropriate prisoners to the open estate will lead to more riots as seen at HMP Ford.'The number of staff who are assaulted every day is on the increase and the cost to the taxpayer is immense. It is clear that the Coalition Government are ignoring the real issues and looking at short-term gains that will have long-term losses.'The Prison Service spokesman said the incident at Littlehey was resolved 'with little incident' at around 9.30pm.He said: 'There were no injuries to prisoners, and no further injuries to staff.'Damage to the young offenders wing was 'very superficial.'The perpetrators have been identified, and relocated to the segregation unit.'They will be subject to disciplinary procedures.'Playing down the claims of the Prison Officers' Association, the spokesman said injuries sustained by the prison officers involved in the disturbance were 'quite minor'.
They shoud just have a 6 by 6 cell with a bed, toilet, sink, and a little cupboard. NOTHING ELSE!!! They have commited the crime so they should do the sentence and at the moment the tax payers are paying for it all. they should have to work for everything in there. look at places around your local area, i bet there are some that arent very pleasent, they should tidy it up! not people on minimum wage that cant get another job! and they should get paid by credit, where they can buy extra food, or a blanket for the winter.
If so, once again it calls into question of female prison management and staff at male institutions.
Hard labour. No pool tables and tvs. Basic meals. Tough discipline. If they step out of line they add 50% to their sentence. If they step out of line again they get the birch. Its about time these clowns learned that prison is punishment not a perk.
Birch them in public! Never mind all the human rights nonsense - they have proven by their behaviour both before incarceration and since that they do not respect the rights of others so that works both ways in my book!
It seems to me prison doesnt work, they act like thugs on the outside, they act like thugs on the inside, they will act like thugs when they are released. There are no consequences for their actions, going to a segregation unit just raises their profile inside. surely this means things need to change.
1, Send them off to war, if its good enough for our brave lads, it's good enough for them. If they dont follow commands there they will be putting their life in thier hands. It might teach them respect and consequences of actions, a few might even come back as civilised members of society.
2, Make them work inside prison for everything e.g food, water, clothing, beds, a prison room etc, if they misbehave it is taken away and they are out in the elements and will have to earn it all again, I dont think they will misbehave in the winter months.

@wcarnation Well the name "Hacker" is a double edged sword. Kinect hackers are only helping the development of the Kinect as a device. If developers or even Microsoft saw this, they would use these Ideas for their future Kinect titles (not plagiarism if they haven't patented it). Everyone who said: "Kinect has no future" should be really kicking themselves in their asses right now.

More hacks from this guy that are more work than just actually "pushing" your joystick in a certain direction. There are plenty of other hacks from others that are more imaginative, why keep showing this same guy over again.

When he died in 1971, he was succeeded by his 19-year-old son, Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier. The younger Duvalier held onto power for 15 years before a revolt forced him to flee the country. Widely accused of corruption, Duvalier has been living in France. Upon arriving in Haiti, the former dictator and his wife went to the Karibe Hotel, according to Ryan Flaherty, head of security for Project Medishare. Duvalier's wife was swarmed by people as she approached the hotel and said that her husband had decided to return to Haiti some time ago, Flaherty reported. "There's definite energy in the air right now," he said, as he stood with a small crowd of Duvalier supporters outside of the hotel. "Right now, people don't know what he's back here for. People don't know if he is just visiting, or if he's here to talk about the earthquake and relief ... or, is he going to make a political move?" said Flaherty. "It's just going to be interesting to hear what he has to say." The United Nations restricted the movement of its staff in Port-au-Prince until further notice, or until the impact of the former leader's arrival becomes clear, said Patrick Hanson, a security officer for the United Nations in Haiti. While groups of people have gathered in various parts of the city, they are calm and no violence has been reported, he said. Last week, Haiti marked the first anniversary of a devastating earthquake that left more than 200,000 people dead. The January 12 anniversary of the catastrophe, as Haitians call it, comes as the Caribbean nation faces new crises: a cholera epidemic that has killed more than 3,700 people and a political impasse sparked by allegations of election fraud in the nation's presidential balloting. Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council released preliminary election results in early December that showed former first lady Mirlande Manigat 31.4 with percent of the vote. Jude Celestin, President Rene Preval's handpicked successor, came in second with 22.3 percent, while popular musician Michel Martelly was third with 21.8 percent. However, a review of the results, conducted by an Organization of American States monitoring team, showed Martelly winning 22.2 percent of the vote to Celestin's 21.9 percent, affording Martelly a spot in a runoff election with Manigat. A runoff, originally scheduled for Sunday, was postponed. Haiti's constitution mandates a new presidential term starting on February 7, but it is unclear whether that will happen. Anges Pierre-Louis, a local business owner, said Haitians are anxiously waiting to see what the government will do next, now that Duvalier has returned. "There are so many parties here and so many mixed feelings that it's really hard to know who to turn to at the moment," she said. It happened in a split second  -  one moment Ben Doltis was playing football with friends, the next he was prostrate, clutching his right knee in agony. The pitch was frozen and slippery, and his leg had twisted awkwardly while he ran. As he fell, he had heard a sickening  -  and familiar  -  crack. 'A year before, I tore a ligament in my left knee and had to take a month off work after surgery to repair it, so I knew it was serious,' says Ben, a managing director from London in his 30s. A trip to A&E confirmed his fears  -  he had torn another ligament.

The knee is the largest joint in the body, where three leg bones meet. The thigh bone and shin bone form a hinge joint and the patella, or knee cap, sits over them and slides as the leg moves. Crucial to this structure are the ligaments, the strong fibrous cables of tissue connecting the bones. The anterior cruciate ligament is one of the four main ligaments, which acts as a stabiliser to the leg. This is what Ben had damaged. It is one of the most frequent ligament injuries and is usually caused by a sudden stop and twisting movement or from a blow to the front of the knee. Damage often occurs while playing sports such as football and rugby, while running for the bus or simply stepping out of the bath. The reconstructive process has historically been lengthy and more painful than the injury itself. 'I couldn't believe I'd hurt my other knee in the same way as before,' says Ben. 'I was devastated. I run my own firm of headhunters for the IT and banking industry and I needed to be at work.'
Until recently, the only repair option was replacing the ligament with tissue from either the patient's patellar tendon, which runs from the knee cap to the shin bone, or the hamstring tendon. 'There are problems associated with both techniques,' says Simon Moyes, consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in arthroscopic  -  or keyhole  -  surgery on the knee, shoulder, foot and ankle. 'Using the patellar tendon leaves a large scar running down the leg, and there is a high risk of pain and sensitivity post-operation. You may also have problems kneeling. 'The hamstring is an important stabiliser of the knee and there is a risk of nerve damage when using this technique. It's like robbing Peter to pay Paul  -  you may suffer a great deal of pain and are effectively undergoing two operations.'

Ben was reluctant to undergo the procedure again. He says: 'The patellar tendon graft left me with a huge scar down the front of my leg and across the knee. As well as being in an extraordinary amount of pain, I had to stay off work for four weeks.' But, as Ben's surgeon, Mr Moyes points out: 'Not only is this injury very painful, but if left untreated you risk further injury and early arthritis.' Luckily for Ben, Mr Moyes is championing a new technique called allograft reconstruction, in which ligaments are transplanted from a deceased tissue donor. While major organs must be taken at the time of death as they begin to decay immediately, making rejection far more likely, tissues such as skin, bone, tendons, heart valves and corneas can be safely donated up to 48 hours later. 'The public don't realise how many patients can be helped by tissue donation,' says Professor John Kearney, assistant director of NHS Blood and Transplant, the UK's major provider of human tissue for transplant. 'Age isn't a barrier to donation. Most people can be considered to be tissue donors. Disease and illness may preclude some people as there may be a risk of disease transmission. However, all potential donors are carefully screened.'

And unlike organ transplants, tissues such as ligaments do not need to be matched and patients do not require drugs to prevent rejection. The donor remains anonymous  -  although a letter from the recipient can be forwarded to the family. Ben says he did not want to know more. 'I was very grateful, and just thrilled to be offered the operation,' he says. The need for knee operations is increasing as more of us take up more active lifestyles - up to 25,000 people in Britain need reconstructive knee surgery each year. ' First we remove the damaged ligament via a keyhole incision,' says Mr Moyes. 'Two small tunnels are drilled into both the shin and thigh bone. Then the allograft or replacement ligament is pulled through, tightened, and fixed into place with pins or screws. Recovery time is reduced, there is less pain and bruising and the scar is much smaller. It can be done as a day case, if you're lucky. 'When performing the old procedure you may be compromised by the size of the patient's ligament, but if you are ordering from a stock, you know that the graft will be the right size. Time in surgery is reduced by about 25 minutes.' The only potential complication is being infected by a virus from donor tissue, although the chances of this are extremely remote. The allograft tends to be available only privately, but Moyes thinks it has so many benefits that it should be used more widely. It costs more than the standard operation because the replacement tendon has to be prepared, but savings in length of time in hospital and recovery period make it an economical option, too. Ben is convinced that the allograft is the superior method but says it is still a very painful procedure. 'I was off work for only a week and a half, but I won't risk it again. i was offered an allograft to repair my cruciate ligament in WALES on the NHS but i refused and opted for hamsting tendon to reconstructIon instead.
This is not new. The use of donor tissue has been around in the USA - one example - for at least 10 years. I had a cruciate ligament reconstruction in 2002 and I was interested in the medicine behind it so I did a lot of research on the topic.
This is old hat. As a county standard footballer, I had my left knee cruciate ligament replaced in 1986. My new ones were synthetic, but at that time many of my old district team mates had already gone on to play professionally and ligaments harvested from cadavers was common even then.
I have the exact same thing in my knee. I ripped my ACL to shreds at the young age of 25. While it's not a major organ that saved my life, I am very grateful to the man or woman who donated their organs and tissue. Before the graft, I suffered from severe pain. Since the graft, I am mostly back to my old self, but with arthritis now.
Like the above, the DM has so often criticised the top surgeons for their salary scales but when consultants like Simon Moyes are championing such innovative techniques, we should only be thankful and give praise to the time and effort people like him have put in to save the victim from added pain and hassle. Allografts have been around in small numbers for a little while, and I have rehabilitated patients with them. They tend to work well.

After 47 years, a local Jamaica Plain grocery store known for its stock of Latin American foods, including specialty products unavailable at stores elsewhere in the city, will close in several weeks to make way for a national supermarket chain, according to a Jamaica Plain Gazette report Friday.
The newspaper's website, citing an interview with the store's manager, said Hi-Lo Foods on Centre Street will close in around three to four weeks. A chain of Whole Foods Market, founded and headquartered in Texas, will likely to take over the space, the report said.
Hi-Lo Foods' manager was reached by phone, but declined comment to Boston.com Friday evening. He referred questions to the store's Newton-based parent company Knapp Foods, Inc.
A spokeswoman for Whole Foods said the company "announces all new stores on our quarterly earnings calls." The next quarterly earnings call is scheduled for February. She declined to comment further.

The divisional round of the NFL playoffs features four regular-season rematches, including heated rivalries in Baltimore-Pittsburgh and Jets-New England.

Lots of blood and guts spilled in this one, but in the end, the Steelers stand tallest. They win it with Roethlisberger winning the QB matchup over Flacco.
All signs point to the Steelers, especially the Ravens' winless streak against Ben Roethlisberger. So, of course, that's why I'm going with the Ravens. What about this NFL season has been predicable?
Ravens can talk all they want. Big Ben plays bigger the bigger the game.
A heavy dose of James Starks will force the Falcons to be honest defensively, allowing Aaron Rodgers to pick a part Atlanta's defense.

I'm gonna have to choose the Falcons by a field goal, the Jets by a touchdown, the Ravens also by a field goal and the Seahawks by a single point as time expires. All in all, I think this entire season is nothing but one hell of a twist. Seahawks in the playoffs and the Colts not? Defending Champs beaten by a squad of chumps? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the Seahawk will be in the Super Bowl.

Chumps??? what are you an arizona fan? We are the NFC West Champions and beat the defending World Champions...CHUMP THAT, they said we wouldn't make it to the superbowl but the seahawks have been there...you have a right to your opinion, but to call the Seahawks Chumps is ignorant at best..

News in Brief: Neil Young Tribute, Stricken City Say Goodbye, Still Flyin' Remixed, Wavelength Series
-- On February 10, New York's Carnegie Hall will host a massive Neil Young tribute show. The lineup includes Patti Smith, J Mascis, the Roots, Aimee Mann, Bettye LaVette, DeVotchKa, Antibalas, and others, and the show raises money for music education programs for underprivileged kids.
-- British post-punkers Stricken City are calling it quits. They'll play their final show at the London venue the Drop on February 10. But they're not going away quietly; their new album, Losing Colour, arrives February 7, and you can hear some tracks from the LP at this SoundCloud page.
-- On February 1, Ernest Jenning Recording Co. will release Neu Ideas, a collection from San Francisco indie-poppers Still Flyin'. It collects two 7" singles and a 12", as well as reworkings from Love Is All, Papercuts, the Hood Internet, Signals, and others.

It's tough to become a TV star when you can't say your band's name on TV, but Damian Abraham has made the leap. The Fucked Up frontman is the new host of "The Wedge", the indie video show on the Canadian music network MuchMusic. Abraham will make his debut on the show January 26 at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific.
In a press release, Abraham says, "'The Wedge' played a huge part in my musical development. I'm honoured to be able to have the same impact on a new generation of music fans."
Talking to Exclaim!, Abraham says that it's been a dream of his to host the show, a staple of the network in the 90s: "It's weird because I never really dreamed of being in a band, but I definitely dreamed of being a VJ. I've always liked playing music for people better than I liked playing music."
As the show's new host, Abraham is already thinking of potential guests and directions, while acknowledging that he can't just play Cro-Mags vidoes. He tells Exclaim!, "There are so many people I've met on tour, so many weird music personalities that I'd love to have on 'The Wedge'. I think already I've made some serious plans to have these people who have weird sides to their personalities. [Dinosaur Jr.'s] J Mascis or Dean from No Age-- people who I have a really fun time with whenever I run into them on the road or play a festival with them. I would love to get 'Weird' Al back to and do some 'Al TV' episodes."

Swedish pop professionals Peter Bjorn and John will release Gimme Some, their new album, March 29 on StarTime International. Indie pop mainstays Stars released their most recent LP, The Five Ghosts, last year. Frontman Torquil Campbell is kicking 2011 off with more new music from his solo project Dead Child Star, as well as his side outfit with longtime friend Chris Dumont, Memphis.
First up is the Dead Child Star album, Cold Hands, Warm Heart, which is available digitally right now at Stars' online store. The nine-track LP features songwriting contributions from Broken Social Scene/Apostle of Hustle member Andrew Whiteman, Metric's Jimmy Shaw, and Minotaur Shock. Memphis' third album, Here Comes a City, will see release March 8 via Arts & Crafts. According to a press release, the album's title is a nod to a song of the same name by Australian indie-pop greats the Go-Betweens. It's a long way from grimy punk basements to the stage of the "Late Show With David Letterman", but No Age have made the journey. The L.A. duo, who look more confident and less spazzy every time they touch a stage, stopped by the late-night institution on Friday night to play the BNM'ed Everything in Between highlight "Fever Dreaming", and Dave enjoyed it way more than you might expect. Micheala Harte was murdered for less than a hundred pounds, according to information gathered by police officers investigating her death on the paradise island of Mauritius last week.The thieves who targeted the newlywed’s room only planned to slip a few rupee notes out of her purse – hoping she and her husband John McAreavey would never even know they had been robbed. It comes after police revealed the 27-year-old had been crying as her killer strangled her.The detective leading the probe into Michaela’s death told the Irish Mail on Sunday that confessions by the three suspects under arrest suggested they did not even plan to take any of her jewellery – or the sterling or euro notes that were also in her purse.Having slipped a few notes from her
three different currencies. He said: ‘There was €250, 3,500 rupees and £50.’He said the sight
got in.’The officer said that both Theekoy and Treebhoowoon have given written confessions to police. Last night, Mooneea was being questioned with a view to securing a confession. Det. Insp. Jokhoo said he was confident that Mooneea would confess to killing Michaela.‘Whether Sandip [Mooneea] confesses or not is immaterial for us,’ he said. ‘Of course, a confession would be in his own interests because if he comes up with a cock and bull story at trial, the jury will appreciate that when he had the opportunity to tell the truth, he didn’t.

Det. Insp. Jokhoo stressed that the Mauritian police had made no errors with their investigation ‘We are sure that we have made no mistakes. We have the right people. We can speak out of experience. Of course we are not going to try these people without a proper investigation. All the evidence will be subject to close scrutiny by a court of law. I can tell you out of my own experience that we haven’t made any mistake.’According to the police, Treebhoowoon’s sworn admissions say that the purse and a few small pieces of jewellery, which were also on the table, were spotted by the room attendant on his first visit to the room. At some point during the couple’s stay, Treebhoowoon spoke to his colleague, Sandip Mooneea, a floor manager in the hotel, telling him about the purse stuffed with cash. He decided he would steal the money and, together with Mooneea, planned to carry out the theft when Michaela and John were out of the room.

On Monday, the two men entered room 1025 while the couple had lunch by the pool. Minutes beforehand, Michaela told husband John that she was popping over to their room to get some off her favourite biscuits to have with her tea.On opening the door of the groundfloor room, she found Treebhoowoon with his hand in her purse.Startled by her unexpected arrival into the room, Treebhoowoon pushed Michaela from behind and she fell to the ground, hitting her head. After rising to her feet, the 27-year-old teacher began to scream. Approaching her from behind to muffle her cries, Mooneea placed one hand over her mouth. He then placed his other arm around her neck in an attempt to stop her from moving. She is believed to have suffered compressions to the neck during a struggle and lost consciousness.Panicked by what had happened, the two men lifted Michaela and carried her into the bathroom. They placed her in the bath and turned on the tap.Meanwhile, Raj Theekoy, also working as a room attendant in the hotel, had heard Micheala’s screams. He saw one of his colleagues emerge from the room in what was described as an ‘unusual state’. He has told police that the man was sweating profusely.He claims that the two men went off in different directions but at one point they met each other again. He didn’t hear what they said but when they separated again he talked to Treebhoowoon, and asked him what was wrong in the room. According to Det. Insp. Jokhoo, Treebhoowoon said to Theekoy: ‘You just keep quiet. There is nothing wrong in the room. You just keep quiet and forget about it.’Approximately 30 minutes after his wife left a poolside restaurant where they had been eating lunch. John McAreavey made his way to the room to check on his wife. He noticed that his keycard wasn’t in his bag and, upon reaching the door, called out to Michaela to answer the door. When she failed to respond, he went to reception and asked for help in getting into the room. Once inside, he discovered his wife’s body in the bathroom.The three suspects appeared in court on Tuesday, where they were provisionally charged in connection with the killing. The following day, the three men took part in a reconstruction held at the actual location of the crime. In the reconstruction, the suspects outlined what they said happened, notes were recorded by the police and photographs were taken. Journalists were prevented from attending the reconstruction by hotel management.Mauritian police have said that skin tissue found under Michaela’s fingernails will prove crucial to the police case against the three men.The island’s prosecutor will decide whether the two men charged with murder will face those charges in court or whether they will face a lesser charge. If they are found guilty of murder, they face up to 45 years in jail. If they are found guilty of manslaughter they could spend 18 years in prison.All three suspects will return to court on Wednesday, when it is expected that they will either be formally charged or released.TEARS WERE RUNNING DOWN HER CHEEKS AS SHE WAS STRANGLED TO DEATH
Michaela Harte was crying in the minutes before she was strangled, the detective heading the investigation into her death has revealed.Detective Inspector Ranjit Singh Jokhoo told the Irish Mail on Sunday that tears were running down the 27-year-old teacher’s cheeks minutes before she died.He said: ‘According to Avinash’s (Treebhoowoon) confession, she was crying after he pushed her to the ground.‘When she came into the room, Sandip (Mooneea) was near the bathroom, out of her line of view. Avinash has told us that he [Avinash] was searching the purse. ‘The lady said, “What are you doing?” and stayed shouting at him. She was furious that someone was searching her purse and she confronted him. ‘He says he pushed her and she fell near the bathroom. She tried to get up and she was caught by Sandip from behind. Of course Europeans leave their country more often than Americans do. You can travel 50 miles from many European capitals and be in a different country. Many Americans commute more than that, each way, just to get to work (I do, for instance). USA is essentially a continent and much larger than Europe. Travelling from New York to LA (which many Americans do on a weekly basis) is the same as travelling from New York to London.
Hmm, it sounds like hell to me, so I don't know why anyone would call it a paradise. People are all too keen to believe the hype about these places. I mean the Caribbean is about the same, i.e. you would need to carry a gun in some parts of it. So that's what you get for vanity and the willingness to pay so much money in the hope that it will do you some good. They would have been better off in Bognor Regis.

Mauritius might not be a paradise to you but it is to millions of other people. how would you feel if other call your country a hellhole especially with all the crime that goes on there. the level of crime in your country is 1000's times higher than in Mauritius.

The thank-you letter is an important part of the job interviewing process, and should always be sent as soon as possible after the interview. Remember those thank you notes you had to write as a kid for the flowered footie PJs you wouldn’t be caught dead in that your ditzy aunt sent for your birthday? Well, it’s a little like that. Except you don’t want to use notepaper with baby seals on it.
Don’t handwrite the letter. You’re not, in fact, writing a thank you note to the aforementioned ditzy aunt. You may hear conflicting views on this point, but all the employers I’ve talked with say they would view a handwritten thank you letter as unprofessional, in addition to being hard to read. And if you think you have the neatest handwriting in the world, you’re probably in denial. The exception to this is if you interview with an extremely touchy-feely, older mom-and-pop company, in which case they might actually appreciate your sending a more traditional and personal type of thank you note. Otherwise, don’t.
If you interview on Friday and the employer plans to make a decision by Monday or Tuesday, don’t snail mail the letter. Snail mail is okay, though usually email is preferable (especially if the interviewers are under 30 or so). If a decision is going to be made quickly, though, you want to make sure they get it before they make their choice. if you write a strong letter expressing your enthusiasm about the job and highlighting points discussed during the interview that clearly illustrate how you can slay the company’s dragons, the employer may more likely hire You the Dragon Slayer than Marty the Nose Picker who was interviewed the day before.
Don’t just send the letter to one person if 5 people interviewed you. Make sure you get the name and contact info for everyone who participated in the interview and send them each a letter, emphasizing each interviewer’s priority and focusing on what you talked about with that person. In other words, if you interviewed with the CEO and the IT Manager for an IT position, your letter to the CEO would be more focused the “big picture” stuff, and the one to the IT Manager more specific to the tech problems the department wants you to help them fix. If you have a group interview with the director and their staff, you can email the director and “cc” the staff (by individual name), and start the letter with, “Thank you and your staff for talking with me about the blah blah position yesterday.”
Don’t send the letter to the wrong person, or misspell the name. Get the right name and spelling before sending anything. Besides making a really bad impression, the person who gets your letter who never met you might think they’re having blackouts or something.
Don’t say bad stuff. Be positive. You want to focus on your strengths that will allow you to help the company solve their problems and are a good match with what they’re looking for. You want to talk about the stuff you learned in the interview that you liked about the company. You don’t want to say, “Although I don’t have experience in blah blah blah and essentially have no clue what I’m doing, I hope you give me a chance anyway.”
Don’t wait too long to send the letter. If you don’t send a thank you letter for a month, even if the employer hasn’t yet hired anyone for the position, if they still remember you it won’t be fondly.
Don’t make it too long. You’re not Tolstoy, and the employer doesn’t want to read War & Peace. Two or three non-rambling paragraphs are enough.

Hi Laurie, I really like these tips and I’m glad Freshly Pressed brought your blog to my attention. With regard to thank you notes, I’ve been told that my thank you notes (to everyone on the team who interviewed me) made a huge impression. I guess very few candidates write thank you notes any more. I’ve also received a very enthusiastic response to my hand-written thank you notes.

Oh man! I wish I had read this around Thanksgiving when I interviews for a job! I waited a little too long to send the thank you cause I was so nervous about writing it. But I didn’t wait a month! It took me about a week to get up the guts and word it correctly. But they had already made a decision by then.

Over a year ago, a former employer wrote me a letter of reference that helped me get into school. She moved shortly after, and I lost track of her.

Well, it’s a different situation than after a job interview – if you can find her on LinkedIn or Facebook, you can always say you lost track of her and always meant to thank her. I’m sure she’d still appreciate it.

An excellent list of “Don’ts”… I used to work in recruitment for years, and you would be surprised the sort of letters we received, with grammar and spelling mistakes. An interesting post on a surprisingly controversial topic. I’ve been out of work for two years now, and every “career expert” has a different take on thank-you notes, just as they do on resumes, online job seeking, cold calls, and every other part of the job hunt that’s important to job seekers.
I’ve seen people say you must send a thank-you note, that you should never send one, that they must be hand-written, that you should leave one with the secretary as you leave the interview, that they should only be sent by email, and more. It all ends up being contradictory and fairly unhelpful for the average job seeker who just wants to do their best.
I say do what you feel is right, but that it’s better safe than sorry – in other words, send a note. It is far more likely to do good than to hurt your case.
The one caveat to this is: Make your thank-you note a simple, sincere expression of gratitude. DON’T use it as a last-ditch effort to try to sell yourself, reinforce how you would be the ideal employee, or otherwise ingratiate yourself to the interviewers. The time to do that was during the interview; if you didn’t make your case then, an email or note sent as an afterthought won’t change their minds. What’s more, it is often a transparent, needy thing, and smart employers will see right through it. Send a note that simply and honestly expresses your gratitude for the interviewer’s time and the opportunity to meet them, or don’t send one at all.

Great advice. I work in the pre-employment field and part of my job is to coach people on things ranging from the right way to do a resume, through what a cover letter is and onto acing the interview. And, THANK YOU LETTERS! If I had a dollar for every time someone told me they didn’t want to “suck up”… I always tell them, I’ve got every job I’ve ever applied for and sent a thank-you note after the interview. It really makes you stand out (if, as you said, done correctly ) Sharing this with my colleagues!

I’m with Mr. Turnage up above. I’ve gotten so many different messages about Thank You notes. I do them sometimes, but most of the time I don’t. In all the jobs I’ve ever had before, I never wrote a Thank You note. The ones I did write one for, I didn’t get the job. I’m sure that’s just a coincidence. It probably doesn’t hurt to do it. But I do believe I would keep it brief.

Never thought about this… In my next job interview iÂ´ll try this advice. I hope this finally gives a well paid job. A thing I never had since I finished college in Portugal.

I was in construction work.It is mostly or usually ‘contractual’ [short, time framed if not per project contracts]jobs. Sending ‘thank you’ message for being interviewed is strange to me. Must people really do that? Who started it all?
I got my jobs because I knew employers saw what they were looking, what they needed, in me. And they had to get me quick or I’ll be in a similar project. I had the edge. Sometimes I did not, so I guess there were others better.
And I bet that is universal of all employers during interviews, and follow-ups by applicants later are but …. I don’t know.

I, too, recently learned that email is preferable to snail mail when it comes to formal thank-you notes these days. Initially, my jaw kind of dropped; it makes sense though. Things move much faster today than they did when I learned about penning a proper thank-you 20 years ago.

In India, after an interview we usually do not send a thank you note. Maybe it is because we don’t know the interviewer’ name / address. But it is a good thought actually. However, I doubt if it would really be read by them either (in these areas).. :/

The takes on “thank you”s vary wildly, but let us say that your take is right in the majority of the cases (and it quite possibly is):
What does that say about the lack of rationality in the company world? In a rational world the “thank you” would just be seen as a mutual waste of time—and the sender would receive minus points. It does not truly bring new information (unless the interviewee did a poor job during the interview), it does not show “follow-up skills” (on the outside, that the interviewee belongs to the school of insurance salesmen who get their deals through pestering customers until they sign in desperation), and if it brings the interviewer’s attention back to the interviewee, then more likely than not in a negative sense.
It may well be that many interviewers are sufficiently irrational to actually be swayed the implicit pat on the back, irrespective of it being an obviously generic (in intent, not necessarily content) pat with a (not-so-)hidden agenda, which would have been given to any other interviewer. If so, the case for the company world is not exactly strengthened.

Great advice. When interviewing, ask for business cards so you know the name and title of the individuals interviewing you. Email thank you notes are quicker and better than handwritten ones.

interesting perspective. I’ve never sent a thank you letter after an interview ( that may be why i never got so many jobs). But i don’t know anyone else that has and its not something i’ve ever heard a recruitment agency tell me to do.

Police said the women had been caught in a crush after mass panic broke out among the thousands of people in the three-storey West Balkan club.
The cause of the stampede is not yet clear, but officials have ruled out earlier reports that it was sparked by a knife attack in the club.
A spokesman for city's rescue services, Pal Gyorfi, told the Associated Press it was too early to say how the women died.
But police spokeswoman Katalin Fanni Horvath told AFP the women may have been trampled on by others trying to escape.
Hungarian media said police were looking into reports of overcrowding and whether there were enough suitable emergency exits.

You’ll note how, in the character designs, the male characters haven’t been given names but the females have – Nima and Jess. From reading the Game Informer article I picked up that Jess is the daughter of Gerry Harding, the park’s chief vet and one of the film’s few characters to appear in the game.
Note: one of these people has a gun. I wouldn’t go expecting FPS dino-slaughter, however.

The Arizona hospital where Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is recovering from Saturday's shooting rampage has sacked three members of its staff for allegedly accessing confidential medical records inappropriately.
The records in question at University Medical Center in Tucson include some connected to the shooting, spokeswoman Katie Riley said, according to The Arizona Star.
"University Medical Center takes the privacy of all patients very seriously," the hospital said in a statement on its website. "The families of all patients whose information was accessed have been notified."
"With advances in technology, ensuring patient privacy has become the focus of hospitals nationwide," the hospital said. "We are not aware of any confidential patient information being released publicly."
Six people were killed and 13 injured in Saturday's shooting. The six injured who are still receiving treatment, including Giffords, are all patients at UMC.
The congresswoman is now responding to commands and is able to move her arms and legs, The Associated Press said.

Lawrence Taylor Accepts Plea Deal in Statutory Rape Case -- NFL FanHouse

Taylor, 51, entered guilty pleas to charges of sexual misconduct and soliciting a prostitute, after the events that took place at a Rockland County (N.Y.) hotel in May.
According to the New York Post, Taylor answered, "Yes," when asked if he had paid for sex. "She told me she was 19," he added.
Taylor is expected to be sentenced to six years' probation when he returns to court on March 22. He faced four years in prison under the original charges.
"We made a decision to aggressively prosecute this case, notwithstanding a defendant in the public eye," Rockland County District Attorney Thomas P. Zugibe said in a statement. "Today's agreed-upon plea reflects that. It is up to law enforcement and prosecutors to fight the demand that drives the underage sex business. Prostitution implies the young women as being complicit. But, these young women, and sometimes young men, are victims, not criminals."
Zugibe said Taylor's guilty plea will force the former New York Giants standout to register as a sex offender in accordance with New York's Megan's Law statute. Taylor was also ordered to pay a $2,000 fine.
The sanctions against Taylor "will undoubtedly serve as a deterrent to 'johns' who support the demand of teenagers for their own sexual gratification," Zugibe said.
New York has three levels to its sex registry and exactly where Taylor will fall will be determined at a hearing. Those deemed to be at Level 1, for instance, aren't part of the statewide database of offenders.
"The district attorney probably accomplished the objectives he wanted to achieve," said Jonathan Ripps, a lawyer in nearby Suffern, N.Y. "I would say this was a fair plea. Would somebody not named 'Lawrence Taylor' received the same deal? I would say so."
Taylor allegedly paid $300 for sex with a 16-year-old runaway at a Holiday Inn in Montebello, N.Y. The girl was allegedly forced into prostitution by Rasheed Davis, who later pleaded not guilty to sexual trafficking charges brought by federal authorities.
"Behind the celebrity, this case is really about the indifference shown by this defendant toward a troubled, young woman forced into a life of prostitution," Zugibe said.
Taylor was charged with third-degree rape, patronizing a prostitute, sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, charges that could have brought four years in prison. He rejected a plea bargain previously that would have called for six months in jail.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will announce reforms which will allow couples to choose how they divide parental leave between them. He is pictured here with his wife Miriam and their son Miguel Parents will be allowed to divide between them almost all of the existing 12 months of maternity leave.They may even be able to split the time off into stretches as short as a few weeks.The proposal has been a key coalition demand for Mr Clegg, who has often spoken of his wish to be a hands-on father to his three children.He claimed it is ‘madness’ to deny men the chance to stay at home and look after their children while mothers go back to work.

At present, women are entitled to six weeks of maternity leave on 90 per cent pay, followed by 33 weeks on statutory maternity pay of £125 a week.In total, they can remain off work for up to a year. Men are allowed two weeks of paternity leave, on statutory pay.Andrew Cave, of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: ‘This is the wrong measure at the wrong time. ‘The Government says it wants businesses to take on more staff but this sort of thing just throws up more obstacles. Maternity leave is already the most complex aspect of employment law for many businesses and this risks making it a complete nightmare.

He said: ‘These rules patronise women and marginalise men. They’re based on a view of life in which mothers stay at home and fathers are the only breadwinners. 'That’s an Edwardian system that has no place in 21st century Britain.‘Women suffer. Mothers are expected to take on the vast bulk of childcare themselves. If they don’t, they very often feel judged. 'If they do, they worry about being penalised at work. So it’s no surprise that many working women feel that they can’t win. ‘Children suffer, too often missing out on time with their fathers. And men suffer too. ‘More and more fathers want to play a hands-on role with their young children. Under the proposals, only the first few weeks of maternity leave would remain exclusively for the use of women.After a short period, perhaps two months, parents would be able to divide up the remaining ten months as they like. This could include allowing both parents to be off at the same time.To allow time for consultation, the proposals will not be introduced until 2015. TAX BREAKS FOR COUPLES: A MORE STABLE FUTURE?David Cameron’s tax breaks for married couples will do nothing to keep families together, according to a report to be launched today by Nick Clegg.The allowance could even be damaging because the handout could persuade arguing parents to stay together rather than split up and give their child a more stable future, said Demos, a left-wing think tank.It cites evidence that children do better in a stable single-parent household than one in which their parents live together after their relationship breaks down.Demos polled 1,017 parents for the Home Front report and found that a third of fathers work more than 48 hours a week, compared with a quarter of men without children.One in eight fathers works more than 60 hours a week and most increase their hours after their youngest turns six.

Carry on wanting it all now parents, its your kids I feel sorry for there won't be many jobs around for them in the future as companies will decide to up sticks & set up elsewhere. They will continue to take overseas workers or not employ people where possible. We are doing ourselves out of jobs by allowing all these stupid laws to ruin businesses. We need workers who are there to work, not parents fitting the job around their personal lives. How can we compete globally? What is the point of bringing kids into the world if there are no jobs or security for their future. We now have global workers, who can pay for pensions we don't need all these kids to pay for who aren't even contributing back as high youth unemployment.
Time other workers rights were considered and they refused to accept covering for all this leave.
Stop banging on about how it used to be. Times have changed, rules and regulations have changed and it is about time we have equal rights in everything. I am an expectant mother and I certainly agree with the patenity leave. I do not want to bring my baby up ALONE. I think all fathers should be given the choice of more than 2 damn weeks to be part of their babies lives. People have plenty to say about dad's who do not want anything to do with their kids and yet it seems there is also plenty to say about fathers who want to be there for their kids. Get a grip and be grateful that there is alot of parents out there who do work and pay their taxes and not sat at home sponging off the government. How dare people think they have the right to say if fathers can or cannot have more time off so they can be part of their babies lives a little more than they would be if they kept on working. It is hard enough bringing up a baby without others dictating the future of our children! Go for it I say
I don't expect either myself, or my husband to receive money from the government in return for having maternity/paternity leave. I just think it is a good idea to allow the father to take the leave instead of the mother. Purely a selfish point of view because we as a family couldn't live off just my husband's wage for more than a month or two but could manage on mine.

Forget the usual moan my kids will provide a pension for old folks...what you mean they will provide it for YOU their mum and dad...and as someone who is 70 the amount of tax I pay at present is spent no doubt on you and your kids....get over yourselves...Its the Young and single that I feel for having to be force to supporting and doing your work for your choice with no reward..more problem and division in the workforce is just what British firms need I think not!
I am expecting a baby in July and these new plans sound like a good idea to me. As the main wage earner in my household is is not financially viable for me to have a long time off work and allowing my husband to stay at home and look after the baby sounds like a great idea!

Marco Rubio, R-Fla."It is unthinkable that the administration would enable the enrichment of a Cuban regime that routinely violates the basic human rights and dignity of its people," said Rubio, born in Miami to Cuban-American parents who had fled Fidel Castro's regime.In its statement, the White House pointed out that it is maintaining the economic embargo against Cuba that became law in 1962.The new measures, the statement, added, "build upon the President's April 2009 actions to help reunite divided Cuban families; to facilitate greater telecommunications with the Cuban people; and to increase humanitarian flows to Cuba."Among the changes, per the White House:Purposeful Travel. To enhance contact with the Cuban people and support civil society through purposeful travel, including religious, cultural, and educational travel, the President has directed that regulations and policies governing purposeful travel be modified to:-- Allow religious organizations to sponsor religious travel to Cuba under a general license.-- Facilitate educational exchanges by: allowing accredited institutions of higher education to sponsor travel to Cuba for course work for academic credit under a general license; allowing students to participate through academic institutions other than their own; and facilitating instructor support to include support from adjunct and part-time staff.-- Restore specific licensing of educational exchanges not involving academic study pursuant to a degree program under the auspices of an organization that sponsors and organizes people-to-people programs.-- Modify requirements for licensing academic exchanges to require that the proposed course of study be accepted for academic credit toward their undergraduate or graduate degree (rather than regulating the length of the academic exchange in Cuba).-- Allow specifically licensed academic institutions to sponsor or cosponsor academic seminars, conferences, and workshops related to Cuba and allow faculty, staff, and students to attend.-- Allow specific licensing to organize or conduct non-academic clinics and workshops in Cuba for the Cuban people.-- Allow specific licensing for a greater scope of journalistic activities.Remittances. To help expand the economic independence of the Cuban people and to support a more vibrant Cuban civil society, the President has directed the regulations governing non-family remittances be modified to:-- Restore a general license category for any U.S. person to send remittances (up to $500 per quarter) to non-family members in Cuba to support private economic activity, among other purposes, subject to the limitation that they cannot be provided to senior Cuban government officials or senior members of the Cuban Communist Party.-- Create a general license for remittances to religious institutions in Cuba in support of religious activities.-- No change will be made to the general license for family remittances.U.S. Airports. According to producers, the current version of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark previewing on Broadway right now is not the completed version of the show. It's missing what they are calling the show's definitive finale.
But don't be alarmed if you've already been and didn't see the ending. No one has! Not even lead producer Michael Colh, who told sources that though he doesn't "expect" the official February 7 opening date to change, the "actual ending that we have planned is still not in the show."
Well, don't you think you guys might want to get on that? If you've learned nothing else from the last few weeks of performances, you should know this show needs to be THOROUGHLY rehearsed so any problems can be addressed. You know, like before an actor plummets 30 feet into solid concrete.

What this IS: Guidelines intended for any group of people looking to standardize web design in Photoshop. Feel free to negate any rules that don't work best for your particular group.
What this ISN'T: The authority for ALL groups or individuals using Photoshop. Not even close.
In some cases, it may make more sense to break down parts of a larger site in to multiple PSD's, but be strictâ"don't go Ctrl/Cmd+N happy.
Bonus Points: Place this PSD(s) in a folder less than 2 folders away from the root of the project (a.k.a. don't bury it).
It's hard for someone else to decipher which document is the latest and greatest, no matter how many labels like "NEW" and "FINAL" are on there.
This eliminates the guess work when trying to find original stock photos and icons. Place a folder named "assets" in the same folder as the PSD or logically relative to it.
Help a developer out: Many times, websites require UI elements (buttons, input boxes, etc.) that aren't accounted for in the design. Make another PSD chock-full of these elements, and you're on your way to becoming *best friends* with your developer.
Be as descriptive as possible on every layer. Also, turn off the automatic "copy" annotation by doing this.
Bonus Points: Be creative and name a layer some inside joke to the rest of the team while still being accurate.
Try to organize your layers logically, by header, footer, etc. You can even color them (yes... if it helps...you can color them).
Bonus Points: Collapse all your folders before saving and closing the file. Makes for a nice, neat presentation for the next person.
This is almost a must. All text, images and other content should have a rational position on the page. Suggested grid systems include 960, 978, and 1140 for the advanced class of responsive web designers.
Only hide layers that may be used, and be sure to delete any layers that won't ever be used. Not for those with separation anxiety, of course.
Group like-elements such as header and footer content, and try not to duplicate anything shared across different views/layouts.
Refrain from resizing type with the Free Transform tool on intended-to-be-HTML text by rounding it to the closest whole value. Rational decisions only, please.
Play fair: Any "licensed for multi-user" font being used should be readily accessible to anyone else without having to contact you.
Bonus Points: Clean out the shared font folder from any fonts you'd only use on a carnival flyer.
Though Photoshop text doesn't always equate to browser text, we can meet it halfway by not using hyphens.
Best-case scenario: keep shapes vector. Second best-case scenario: Rasterize them but have a duplicate of the original vector invisible on a layer below.
Be certain every image used, from stock photos to icons, are also located in the assets folder. Textures wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Bonus Points: Make a backup folder somewhere outside the project folder for all purchased assets.
Utilize the "snap" feature (View > Snap to) when aligning elements. Otherwise, you may be eyeballing it, and staring at your screen hours on end won't help your accuracy.
Bonus Points: Everytime something locks into the grid, snap your fingers for the full effect. Just do it once. Really.
Objects that are rasterized are OK to overlay. Text and shapes that have color properties are not because it's deceiving.
Bonus Points: Stay away from Bevel & Emboss. Unless you're designing a 1990's business site. ZING.
Unless you're designing for a CSS3-supported browser, be sure gradients backgrounds have appropriate start and end points to be used as background images.
Perceive depth realistically. In most cases, a very subtle drop shadow makes more sense than a heavy one.
Get someone else's eyes on your comp before it goes out to eyes who will undoubtedly find your grammatical mistakes.
Be certain that a key content isn't missing, such as a nav item or copy block. It's harder to band-aid later.
Bonus Points: Be a part of the wireframing process. It'll also help you not neglect things when designing.
Before anything hits the browser, in most cases it should have been purchased. This safeguards against missing it later in the process.
Step 2 in befriending your developer: keep up to date in which browsers support what you're designing. You may be able to sacrifice rounded corners/drop shadows/gradients in specific cases.
Sounds like a given, but you'd be surprised. Choose File > Save for Web when exporting pieces for development. Simply saving JPEGs through File > Save As... will usually get you 8x the filesize and an all kinds of color issues.
Bonus Points: Talk to your developer to make sure you're exporting exactly what they need first.
This has nothing to do with insurance (it's late in the list, humor is getting dry, if not dry at the beginning). Choosing "Progressive" when saving a JPEG will ultimately load a low-resolution version of the image first and "progressively" sharpen it. Especially helps with larger images.
Be an old school web designer: chisel down those file sizes by negotiating quality/colors used. Most sites don't NEED teeny files, with dial-up fading away (I just dated myself). But large sites with tons to load can use smaller image sizes. It adds up.
Bonus Points: Don't just leave this to the developer to worry about. Exercise caution when exporting images.
@andCKsays so true. Maybe that's useful in photo editing? Adobe needs to make a web design program, strictly taking care of such issues.
